Consultations & Fees

A consultation can often be the best action. This is your valuable opportunity to tell your story, express your concerns and fears, ask direct questions of a legal expert who can give you straight answers or can find out the answers Every person’s situation is unique and desires particular attention to seek a solution. With some good advice, you may be surprised at your options.
You can tell your story without concerns you will disclose something harmful to you. Your discussions with an attorney are privileged and state law protects your right to freely discuss just about anything with your attorneys to get legal advice. Clients can refuse to disclose these confidential communications, or to allow their lawyers to disclose them in just about every situation. The attorney-client privilege even extends beyond the death of a client. On of the few exceptions to the privilege are communications by which you seek advice on how to commit a crime or fraud are not privileged. The privilege covers discussions on how to stay within the law.
What to bring
Since a consultation is a initial inquiry, you need only bring essential documents, and might also bring those that are not necessary, but can be helpful. Contracts at issue, tax returns, financial statements, and things that appear important to you can be reviewed.
What not to bring
Physical evidence of a client’s possible crime may not be covered under the privilege since the attorney may be required ethically to turn such evidence over to law enforcement. DO NOT bring contraband such as illegal drugs, weapons, another person’s mail, or recordings of illegal surveillance. If you have doubts, discuss such issues with the attorney first.
The consultation, which is usually about an hour, is a flat $300.
Beyond the consultation, legal services can vary substantially but at the initial retainer we can estimate approximately what may be required. Some services are flat rates such as Will and contracts preparation, or uncontested divorces and similar predictable proceedings. Other services require a retainer on deposit of $2500 to $15,000; with services based on a hourly rate that may vary from $250 to $425 per hour. Always, the determination of handling your case and therefore the cost is yours.
